St. James Memorial Garden

The Memorial Garden at St. James Episcopal Church is on the hillside behind the church.

It consists of part of the slope itself, and the low-walled “co-mingled” garden.

The freestanding granite cross stands at the top of the Memorial Garden area.

The Memorial Garden was created in 1974 in memory of Geoffrey Hamlin, a beloved member of St. James.

The Memorial Garden is a private burial ground containing only ashes (cremains), where deceased persons are commemorated by being named on one of the garden’s memorial stones. Formerly, there was the additional option of a bronze marker set into the ground near the co-mingled garden.

All ashes, or cremains, are interred either directly into the earth, or first placed in a biodegradable container and then placed into the earth.  Spaces on the stone may be reserved for spouses or other family members to be listed together and engraved at the same time.

The part of the Memorial Garden outside the low-walled co-mingled garden is no longer being used for interment.

The St James Memorial Garden is a repository for the cremains of individuals who have had a significant personal relationship (for example, a parishioner) with St. James or a significant family relationship with an active member of St. James.
